“Pickle”

Slow is Fast. Slug.

Split-Second Decisions.

Split-second decisions. Humans’ most valuable skill set is their abilities to tap into intuition. The divinity that lies right between our heads and our hearts. The immaterial magic that is the secret to our lives, or at least how we wish our lives to go. On a random day this winter, the @slugdepot Instagram page received a like from an old friend of mine, Adrian. I had not seen Adrian in quite some time, but upon looking at his page, in one split second, I made the decision to ask him to be in a Slug Story. Personal style, perspective, perseverance, were all things I saw in Adrian’s page to know he was a slugger. Upon reaching out to him, Adrian told me he had a feeling we would work together one day. Intuitively, he was right. This Slug Story takes place at a familiar scene for Adrian, and a not so-familiar place for a Slug (so you would think). On May 17th, Adrian and the Slug 1 “Pickle” ran the track.

Exactly How It’s Supposed to Be.

For this story, I’ll skip all of the planning and go right into the production. I arrived at the Wagner College Stadium, which was decorated in perfect Pickle green. I drove into the parking lot and waited for Adrian and his fiancé to come. When Adrian arrived, it was like we had seen each other last week. We flowed with great ease. We decided to start by just taking a lap around the track. With the slug on his back, we began talking about all things non-slug related. Creation, Timing, Life since we last saw each-other. The day was beautiful and blue skies colored the air. After all the rescheduling we had to do, it aligned perfectly that today was to be be 70° and sunny. By the time we made one full lap, we were ready to go.

2032 Olympics: Sluggin’

We set up Adrian on the blocks (the metal thing you place your feet on before starting a race). He told me he hadn’t used the blocks for quite a while, but I couldn’t tell. We went on taking photos of him getting ready, him adjusting the slug, him laying on the turf, him hanging in the stands. His fiancé joined us as we climbed the bleachers. His dog joined as well. It was a family affair and I was very grateful to be a part of it. As we sat down on the benches by the track, I began to take photos of Adrian, and only a couple seconds in, he started to talk about his love for track and what the sport has given him. Mindset. Dedication. Self Improvement. He said it doesn’t matter if you come in 1st or 13th… it’s you versus you. It’s you versus your personal record (PR). I was really so moved by his words. Slug is not about the aesthetic, it’s about the moment. The truth and the seeking of it. That’s what sluggin is and I couldn’t be more pleased with the day that I got to spend with Adrian. It was just his birthday so please wish him a blessed one. I want to say one last thing regarding this Slug Story: 2032, Sluggin’ = Olympic Sport.
