A Single Compliment.
You never know the impact of a compliment. How one person’s interest may inspire a whole chain of events. I say this because I was inspired by a comment once … a comment from someone who I had not spoken with in almost 10 years. Come to think of it … I’m not sure if we actually ever spoke at all. But sometimes, someone’s essence can travel way farther than their physical form. This person made her impression on me back in the halls of high school, but after she commented on the @slugdepot Instagram page showing support of what we were doing, I was inspired to reach out and thank her. Soon after, I decided to ask her to be the first Slugger of our new release. This girl’s name is Agape and this is her Slug Story.
What have you done since High School?
Agape wrote a really nice message on the Slug Instagram when the Slug 1 “White Toes” came out. Not seeing the name in a while, I went on her page to see how she was doing. One look at her profile and I found she had been killing it! She had played college soccer, traveled around the world, became a teacher, became a coach, got married, had a child, and had become very serious about her fitness, launching her own line of athletic wear. Wow, what did you do since High School? I was greatly drawn to the effortlessness in her exercise videos. That’s the cool thing about fitness art: the proof is in the pudding. You can’t just talk about it, because the results are right there … physically in front of you. I respect that a lot. I reached out to Agape one afternoon, and we got on the phone. After a brief catch up, I told her about Slug and we discussed the possibility of working together. It was a sweet and concise phone call. We discussed some ideas. We discuss some preferences. And ultimately, we decided that the most authentic setting for her story would be at one of the many gyms she attends. Specifically for locational convenience, we chose the Crunch Fitness on Travis Avenue in Staten Island. I have never been to this Crunch Fitness which is crazy because I think every single person on the East Coast of the United States has attended this gym. I was both nervous and excited to go.
Color Nausea
The morning of the shoot, I woke up around 5:45am for the gym’s opening at 7am, when the gym would be as empty as possible. I showed up around 6:45am to scout the gym. Agape arrived shortly after, and we got to work. She was wearing a black and green activewear set which perfectly matched this new Slug colorway. We were unsure of what outfit would complement the “Pickle”, as it included several different kinds of greens. A slight variation could take away from the slug, take away from Agape, and put us in a mood of color nausea … and ain’t nobody wanna feel color nausea. But, luckily, the outfit worked perfectly, accentuating Agape’s bright smile and neon green Slug laces (antennas).
The Slug Workout Plan
Stretching, posing, dumbbells, pull-ups, chin-ups, muscle-ups (we thought about it lol) and before we knew it, we shot the last scene: the Stairmaster. To me, the Stairmaster is the symbiotic workout machine for Sluggers. You gotta get into a different mode when on the Stairmaster. When you’re climbing those stairs, especially stairs like these with no destination, you really have to look within, focus on the self, and climb. Climb, climb, climb, and climb. Sluggin’.
Life is a beautiful thing. For two people who have not seen each other in years to connect over family, creativity, plans and dreams for the future. It is what I feel adulting should truly be like. Thank you Agape for a great morning.
