Simply. Have. Fun.
Let Loose.
As Isaiah and I approached the next Slug Story, we knew we wanted to show another side of sluggin’ it. Sluggin’ it is definitely perseverance, it is definitely reflection, but what is just as important, as battling through the hardships, is finding time at the end of your day to relax, and let loose. We had this idea after a car ride coming home from the ferry, in which we spoke about how great it was going to be to return to our cozy homes. We looked at the people in our lives who truly embody having their own place, their own space, and “me” time to unwind. Isaiah had recommended his friend, Sara, would be the perfect person to show us how she slugs it after a long day of work.
It’s Saturday Night.
On one Saturday night, Isaiah and I met at a quaint and almost magical walk-up apartment, waiting outside for Sara to come get us. As we waited, an old man came out to us with a little dog. He said a little something , nothing really that substantial, but it all just felt like a whimsical Hallmark movie. The door opened and Sarah peaked her head out asking us, “What are you doing standing there? Come in!”. We walked up the stairs to one of the coziest apartments I’ve ever visited. Wood floors warmed our feet as we walked through a nicely painted corridor. Through curved arches into a big open living room, sounds of Jorja Smith rang through the apartment. The apartment almost felt candlelit with how warm and soft the lighting was, however, it was just very tastefully selected lamps which set this mood. As Isaiah and I sat down on the couch, Sara came out, and we began to select the outfit for the film. After a couple of changes between dress pants and work skirts we came to the final fit. Sara had curly hair, a beige blouse and cool flared pencil pants. Sara and Isaiah who already had a great rapport began bouncing off each other with ideas and jokes. I was in charge of the equipment for today and so I was concentrating on surveying the shots and the scenes for the shoot. We started the shoot, trying to feel out how the story would go. We had the idea for Sara to open the door, coming home from work, and be visually exhausted. We tried, and tried, and tried, and tried, and tried, until we got something that we thought could work. We then went to the kitchen, where she would be taking a glass for her nightly beverage. We tried, and tried, and tried, and tried, and tried until we got something that worked. We uncorked and poured the beverage into the glass. We tried, and tried, and tried, until we got something that worked. Finally, she waltzed over to the couch and rested … we tried, and tried, and tried, until we got something that worked. We got something. We really did, but for some reason…it didn’t work. It didn’t sit right with us.
Wine Down ? Na, Wine’d Up.
So. We did what humans have done for hundreds and thousands of years : sat down and poured ourselves a glass of wine. Finally, we were starting to have some fun. We drank and talked, and put on music, switched the lighting, danced. It was as if the whole atmosphere changed. It was like we were snowed in a log cabin. We got loose. After a good 30 to 40 minutes, I looked up and called to do the shoot again. We all looked at each other and knew it was time. Sara got in her first position. Anddddd action ! Boom. First Shot : Done. Boom. Second shot : Done. Boom. Third Shot : Done. Boom. Fourth shot : Done. Boom. Final Shot : Done. That’s a wrap.
How easy it all is when you have some fun. Have a glass on us. Slug.
