Slug Hampton.

Locals Only.

When I say “The Hamptons”, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it expensive dinners? Lavish parties? Big Houses? Probably something along those lines. For me, though, The Hamptons has always been “cozy”. I grew up visiting Montauk ever since I was born. My grandparents had lived there for many years and I came to love a completely different side of “The Hamptons”: homemade dinners, fireplace talks, and pancake houses. I always viewed it as a humble place, however, as I grew up and more and more of my peers began to visit, I realized it had the connotation of being the exact opposite. And the only people that really understood that paradox were and always will be, the locals. Last year, right before we were launching Slug, I went into one of my favorite stores there, RRL, and met one of the workers there. A local – a young kid with ill style, using Ralph Lauren garments and styling them in a fresh new way. We spoke briefly, exchanged contacts, and shortly had the idea to ask him to be in a Slug Story. His name was Jeison and he brought along two more locals, his best friends Andrew and Luis, to show us the real Hamptons.

Link Up.

Gabe and I met up with Jeison, Andrew, and Luis in the parking lot of the YMCA. I had never been to the YMCA, but it looked fairly new and had an interesting exterior profile (cast in place concrete). The boys of East Hampton were posted up outside their cars looking cool as shit. I had told Jeison that each of them would be wearing a different color, and they all came through with different styles fits - green, blue, and orange accents.

Take a Chance in a Foreign Place.

Right away, we told them the rundown. We’d start in the car, go to Goldberg’s for lunch, and finally to one of their houses to finish. It was simply a day that they would have anyday. An effortless hang. Along the way, we discussed music, creativity, our backgrounds, life in EH. A perspective I, nor the people who vacation there would ever get. I think that’s one of the biggest themes we try to show with Slug: walk your own path. Discover things that you might not have discovered. Take a chance by not doing what everyone else is doing. You may find yourself in a better place than you could have ever imagined.

I digress.

I know I said in the beginning of this Slug Story, that you may think of big houses when you think of The Hamptons, and ironically, we ended up at one. Sometimes … the stereotype is true. But find that out on your own.
